About the Art
Cathy Mabius is known predominately for her landscape paintings.
Using an impressionistic painting style, expressionistic brushstrokes create compositions that capture the varied landforms we see in nature. Color harmonies are of integral importance to capture the quality of light of a location, the time of day, the weather and a specific sense of place. Although Cathy’s artwork is firmly in the realistic realm, fine detail takes a backseat to broken brushwork that at close range is as interesting as standing back from the artwork to see the overall effect of the painting.
The artist uses the term “Dynamic Tranquility” to describe the balance of active and uplifting qualities with a calm peacefulness she strives for in her paintings.
In the past, Cathy created paintings of her own choosing based on her own travels, experiences, and personal aesthetics that were sold through galleries or her own studio. Currently, the artist has chosen to only create commissioned paintings where her clients direct her creative process where the end product is a one-of-a-kind painting tailored to their needs, wants and personal aesthetic. After doing many such commissions, Cathy knows the questions to ask before starting to paint to hone in on what will become a painting suited to her clients which includes not only the size/format and the type of scene/locale, but also the color scheme, feel and mood the painting will evoke.
Cathy can use the clients own photos or videos as reference or, if possible, visit the landscape and take her own photos and/or do a painted plein air study. She cannot, however, recreate other artist’s paintings or use copyrighted photos.
